My placement at Whyalla Veterinary Clinic was above and beyond my expectations. I was well informed what the placement would be like from my two housemates who had also done clinical placement at Whyalla, however as much praise as it had received, it still could not do it justice.

From the minute I got off the plane and was greeted by a smiling and joking Karen, I knew it would be a great placement. All of the nurses and staff are incredibly friendly, helpful and patient. They make sure that you are always fueled with coffee and that you get at least a day off to rest!

Although my placement was towards the end of my final year, I still felt very incompetent with my surgical skill. I had watched countless surgeries in my previous placements, but actually getting the experience of completing a surgery from start to finish is another experience in itself. I can now say I feel confident having completed many spays, neuters, lump removals, pyometra surgery, caesarian, dental cleaning and extractions. I felt extremely nervous during my first few desexings, however the vets at Whyalla walk you through the most simple of procedures and they ensure you that you are doing a great job!!

Andrew, Sebastian and Hoy have all been amazing mentors. They are all very encouraging, and have great confidence in you - probably even more than you have in yourself. However, by the end of three weeks I feel like I have the confidence that they had seen in me all along. They give you great tricks to remember drug doses (and will test you!!).

As well as surgical skills I definitely improved my consult skill and confidence. I also practiced many day one skills such as ear cytology, urinalysis, blood smear, mass impression smear and interpretation. I was also able to come up with treatment plans with the help of the supervising vet.

My time at Whyalla has gone very quickly. Time sure flies when you are having fun. I feel like I would look up at the clock and it would already be 3:00, time for afternoon consults, then before you knew it you were back at Sandi’s to rest up for another big day.

Overall, I can honestly say that Whyalla Veterinary Clinic has been my most valuable clinical placement as it has given me the clinical skill and the confidence I need to graduate. A very heart felt thank you to all the vets, nurses, staff and Sandi.
