Student teaching. Our gift to the future.
The Externship offered at Whyalla Veterinary Clinic has been a fantastic experience for me in my final year of veterinary science. During the externship I have been given the opportunity to perform consultations, work up and treat cases under direct supervision of experienced qualified veterinary surgeons. I have been able to improve my surgical skills through performing and assisting in numerous surgeries including cat and dog castrations and sterilisations, cruciate surgery, and dentistry.
The staff at Whyalla Vet Clinic are very supportive and have been fantastic to work with. They are very patient and helpful and always have time to help under any circumstances. Not only this, they all have a great sense of humour. The clinic is very well equipped and is completely computerised. Their fully equipped pathology laboratory has allowed me to refine my clinical pathology skills and pathophysiology of the major organ systems.
Working up and treating cases has allowed me to become very familiar with drug treatments and protocols of various diseases and commit commonly used drugs and dose rates to memory.
This opportunity has been allowed me to feel confident and competent in performing routine small animal medicine and surgery. I would highly recommend this practice to anyone interested in pursuing a career in small animal medicine and surgery as it allows plenty of opportunity to enhance these skills and more. If the opportunity was to arise it would also be a fantastic practice to work as a new graduate.
Thanks again to all of the staff at Whyalla and Roxby Downs Veterinary Clinic for the wonderful experience.
