We are 100% behind the microchipping of cats and dogs as it provides a permanent form of identification for your pet and ensures you have the best chance of being reunited with your pet in the event your pet is lost.

A microchip is a small electronic chip, about the size of grain of rice, that is implanted under the skin, at the back of the neck between the shoulder blades. If it is properly implanted, it will stay there for the life of your pet, providing a permanent form of identification. Microchips are tamper proof and unlike collars and tags, they can’t fall off or be removed.

The microchip comprises of a biocompatible glass capsule that contains a microchip, capacitor and copper antenna coil. It does not contain a battery and is non-toxic to your pet. To read the microchip, a scanner is passed over the microchip, which powers up the chip and reads the transmitted RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) number that identifies your pet.

The implantation process, whist straightforward, must be done correctly to prevent the microchip moving and to ensure it is relatively painless for your pet.

Microchipping a dog or cat is compulsory in South Australia.

  • In South Australia all dogs and cats must be microchipped.
  • Puppies and kittens must be microchipped before they are sold or before they reach 12 weeks of age.
  • If you adopt a dog or cat that is not microchipped, you must have a microchip implanted within 28 days of the adoption.
  • What is the fine for not microchipping my dog or cat? Expiation fee: $170.00 to a maximum fine of $2500.00

What if my dog or cat isn’t microchipped?

Aside from risking a fine, if your dog or cat is found wandering and has no identification, it could be classed as a stray and adopted out to a new home or in some cases, euthanized. If it is microchipped to a new owner, then it is no longer your pet.
