Student teaching. Our gift to the future.
Whyalla, Roxby Downs, and Cowell veterinary clinics are very busy small animal clinics that support many animal lovers in these towns.
The clinic is well set up with online computer systems, Xray machine, and blood machines. Roxby Downs, approximately 4 hours away from Whyalla, is also a great clinic with caring and competent vet nurses. A vet visits the clinic every fortnight and so some cases are dealt with online video consultations through vet nurses. Three clinics communicate well with Skype all the time and work as a great team. Digital pictures can be sent for specialists for opinions having no referral clinics around. It is a very smart and impressive way of utilizing the modern technology!
I have had many opportunities to do routine surgeries such as stitch-ups and desexing during my stay. It is great to feel the responsibilities, yet still being able to ask for help in case something goes wrong. It definitely helped me improve my surgical and anaesthetic skills, and I am sure I will be much more comfortable and confident when I start working next year. Both Andrew and Yuri are dedicated and skilled vets, and I admire their care and passion for animals. I have been inspired to be a professional veterinarian like them.
There is certainly large exposure to different and interesting cases being a remote town. The clinic is always busy with both healthy and sick animals and keeps vet students exhausted by the end of the day! The clinic covers after hours for emergencies so I have attended a few of these too. There are always cute puppies and kittens to rehouse (so I got to play with them!!) and it is always great to see these animals having a chance to find a good home. Some even go to Adelaide, Melbourne, and Qld!
I feel lucky to see this unique part of Australia, it is different from anywhere I have visited before. It is always scary coming to places alone where you know no one and nothing about. But I was welcomed by all the friendly and caring clinic staff. Andrew provides students with a car and a laptop, which no other clinics do. I stayed with Sandy, a mother of one of the vet nurses and it was great to be able to go “home” after a busy day and find dinner ready for you! Finally I would like to thank Andrew and Yuri, who kindly spent their time to teach me their knowledge and skills, and all the vet nurses and staff, Sandy, and clinic pets who made my three weeks special.
