The Loaded Dog by Henry Lawson (1867-1922)
Located on McDouall Stuart Avenue, Whyalla, South Australia.
In the days when poetry recital was a popular pastime, the works of Henry Lawson were distributed far and wide. Regarded as Australia's finest poet, he was a brilliant, sad, lonely man whose biography would bring tears to the most hard-hearted soul. This story, however, will bring tears of a different nature.

About the sculptor: Andy Scott | ![]()
Andy Scott is a world-renowned figurative sculptor who works in steel and bronze. He combines traditional figurative symbolism and art forms with contemporary fabrication techniques to create iconic sculptures for the public realm. The inspiration for this statue came from “Arabesque”, a stunningly lifelike Arabian horse, created in response to the coastal erosion, using the same construction technique of welding a mosaic of thousands of small sections of 10 & 12 mm steel together. The loaded dog was modelled on Tommy, the central character of Henry Lawson’s short story of the same name. The statue was constructed at Andy Scott’s workshop in Glasgow, Scotland and is his tenth commission in Australia. More about Andy Scott here. See Andy Scotts web site here.
