Population growth and the MDG's.

Population growth and the Millenium Development Goals. Canberra, Australia. March 14-15, 2008.

Reducing the world population by one billion would be a thousandth of the cost of other interventions for climate change. There was a major effort in the 1970s to make family planning available around the world. Cultural and religious reservations lead to large families and the inextricable link with poverty. Rapid population rise means all efforts go to survival needs, with no resources left over for education and development. Rapid movement from rural to urban areas adds to overloaded infrastructures.

To reach people who can benefit from family planning, the Media Centre has turned to radio, creating dramas to connect people’s emotional understanding of their problems with rational solutions. Real life situations are played as soap operas, and are proving successful. The characters demonstrate that some people don’t change but some are transitional and do. The serial drama uses cliff-hangers, with socialcognitive methodology, resulting in emotion reinforcing learning memory.
